Evernote
date-created: 2023-02-21
The second PKM 個人知識管理 I have, since 2011 (really? Feels much longer ago to me), collecting mostly unread detritus of web articles and more and more posts by others, but still useful for memos, account info, passwords, etc.
Free stuff is hard to break up with. After all, it hasn't changed its 60MB-per-month free cloud storage (without an upper total limit, as far as I remember) and unlimited syncing for ages. Only lately did I hear about an upper limit of 200K notes for the Pro user. I am not even that, but luckily my EV notes number only around 30K.
Migration whence
Since April 2023, I have reduced but not entirely eliminated Evernote usage. I still put "junk" stuff in it when clipping a web article or when I am not writing anything myself except a short one-line comment. For anything that requires some writing, I tend to put it in Obsidian. One exception: I still use it to keep my audio book summary records.
Quick verdict: 2 stars (see issues)
Issues

2023-12-03 Evernote whole-notebook export to its native format .enex couldn't complete the 25k notes without erroring out. So far, 3 times at 8%, 12% and about 32%. I had to delete the mysterious offending notes and keep trying. A huge time sink. 2.5 hours to reach only 30%.

2023-12-02 New version doesn't export tags, creation time, and modified time in visible form in html like the old version did. They are encoded in
<meta>
tag, so not readily searchable by any other programs like Apple Notes after importing the html. -
2023-12-02 While manually managing exports, Evernote desktop (Mac) kept crashing.
-
2023-12-01 Free version limited to 50 notes and one notebook. I began Evernote termination and exodus 「永遠」筆記(Evernote)不再永遠. Deducting one full point from quick verdict to 2.

2023-08-25 iOS version suddenly failed: I could no longer add a new note. The new note interface grayed out and doesn't allow data entry. How ridiculous! Searching for notes and editing existing notes seem okay. (Update 2023-08-28) After reinstalling the app twice and approving some iOS permission prompts, the problem seems resolved for now
