How to enable texting (SMS) in the iMessage app on MacOS and other iOS devices (e.g. iPad)

I thought the iMessage app on the MacOS could simply work to send/receive SMS texts and was baffled why it never worked. I just learned I need to set it up:

iPhone > Settings > Messages > Text message forwarding > turn on the device to enable the service
